要約、抄録、注釈等 "The longest river in Europe, the Volga stretches over 3,500 kilometres from the heart of Russia to the Caspian Sea, separating West from East. It has played a crucial role in the history of the diverse peoples who now form part of the Russian Federation, and both unites and divides the land through which it flows. Janet Hartley looks at how, from the seventh century to the present day, the Volga has shaped the economic, political and cultural history of Russia. She explores not only what life on the river was like for the people who worked along its banks, but also why control of the Volga was vital. Early states evolved along the river; the conquest of its key towns created a powerful Russian Empire under Ivan IV; and the failure of Nazi troops to take command of the river was crucial to the outcome of the Battle of Stalingrad and the Second World War. Just as importantly, the art, stories and legends inspired by the Volga have played a significant part in the evolution of Russian culture and identity. Hartley leaves us with a vivid sense of the enduring importance of the Volga - in the words of the traditional Russian song, The Song of the Volga Boatmen, 'Mother River, Mighty stream so deep and wide'." -- Book jacket.
